The Ethiopian government offers various scholarship opportunities for South Sudanese students to study in Ethiopia. Here are the key details:
Scholarships for South Sudanese Students
- In November 2022, Ethiopia increased the number of scholarships for South Sudanese students from 100 to 150.
- For the 2023/2024 academic year, Ethiopia granted scholarships to 120 South Sudanese students for undergraduate, TVET, BSc, postgraduate and PhD programs.
- In June 2024, the Ministry of Higher Education in South Sudan announced 188 additional scholarship opportunities from Ethiopia, including 160 for undergraduates, 25 for Masters, and 3 for PhD studies.
Scholarship Coverage
- The scholarships cover tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses for South Sudanese students in Ethiopia.
- Students are expected to pay for visa, resident permit, and air ticket to Ethiopia.
Eligibility Criteria
- South Sudanese citizenship is required.
- For undergraduate programs, applicants need a Certificate for Secondary Education dated 2022-2023 and its equivalent, an authenticated transcript, and an academic certificate.
- Masters students must submit their authenticated undergraduate transcripts and certificates.
- PhD applicants need to submit their Masters thesis in hard and soft copies for scrutiny.
- Other requirements include a valid passport, birth certificate, medical fitness certificate, and passport-sized photos.
Application Process
- The application process for the 188 scholarships announced in June 2024 started on June 27, 2024 and will end on July 10, 2024.
- Certificates obtained in South Sudan must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while those obtained outside the country need endorsement by the South Sudan embassy before authentication.
These scholarships demonstrate Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting the educational development of South Sudanese students and strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
